Define Body and Mind has found a great presence in Houston by focusing on a healthy mind and a healthy body. They have found so much success with this focus that they are already expanding into a second location in River Oaks that is opening in October, after only opening the first location a year ago. Their interest in health and green design led them to work with us, and we are proud to be working with them and using finish products from New Living that are environmentally friendly and conducive to a healthy interior.
Define is being built out with the talents of Aj Smith from Forsite Studio, a New Living coworker. Here are some of their renderings.
Wondering what New Living is all about? Want to know exactly what the terms “non-toxic” and “natural” mean? Then check out this video where customers and our owner, Jeff Kaplan, explains exactly why we sell healthy, non-toxic, and green products. I would write about it here but it’s probably just easier to watch the video:
As part of our ongoing New Living Talks series we have another fascinating speaker, Steven Deutser of Park Lane Builders and Park Lane Healthy Homes, to discuss “Nursing Your Home Back to Health: Understanding Your Home, Your Health, and Indoor Air Quality.” Deutser, a home builder and healthy home auditor, explains the relationship between energy efficiency and health. He also explains why our homes are integrated systems where indoor air quality is dependent on how our homes are built, what they are built with, what products we choose to put in our homes, and how we act in our homes.
In the first clip Deutser answers the question “What is a Healthy Home?” In the second clip he gives us a tour of the Park Lane/New Living “healthy playhouse” in the New Living Store. In the third video you’ll see Deutser’s full talk.

Steven Deutser is the owner of Park Lane Healthy Homes. Through Park Lane, he conducts home energy audits where he assess both the energy efficiency, indoor air quality, and homeowner practices to determine the health of your home. Check out the Park Lane Healthy Homes website or come see the New Living playhouse at New Living to learn all about what makes a home healthy and what products you can use to make your home healthier.

We recently worked with our friends at Smart Meals on the buildout of their flagship Shepherd Location, which just opened this month. From J.R. Cohen; Director Retail Operations – “Smart Meals chose to source and install all of our finish materials from New Living in order to ensure the healthiest possible indoor environment for our customers and workers. We were especially happy to know the pricing was the same as any other environmentally unfriendly” product. Smart Meals seeks to align itself with other local businesses committed to a social, environmental and economic bottom line.”
Smart Meals has truly supported locally with their choice to use Texstone, a recycled content countertop which is not only made from materials found within the 610 loop, but is also produced entirely within the 610 loop.
We made these tables for all their seating areas with Decopoz, a concrete resurfacing product made from recycled content and all non-toxic coatings. This is our most efficient countertop option, which allowed Smart Meals to use all healthy building materials under budget.
Smart Meals’ conference and meeting space, featuring no added urea formaldyhyde cork flooring with non-toxic adhesives, and all-natural American Clay wall plaster. American Clay is great for healthy indoor air quality.
Join us for the Emerging Green Builders (of the US Green Building Council) May educational event Wednesday, May 20th from 6-8pm at the store. Stephanie Edwards-Musa will be speaking at the event. Stephanie is a realtor and certified eco-broker who also runs a blog at www.turninghoustongreen.com. Stephanie will be speaking about current trends in green building and discussing everyday things you can do around the house to make your house more energy efficient. Stephanie is a great resource to learn how and where to buy, sell or remodel a green home in Houston.
The event is open to the public and complimentary drinks and appetizers will be served.
